Bands, promoters and venues begin to get back into gear this month for the onset of the Autumn gig season and the return of the student masses. September sees an impressive array of talent playing across our fair city.
Getting in early, and one of the gigs of the month, is Merchandise at the Harley. The Tampa mope rockers draw heavily of the local punk/hardcore DIY scene and have improved with every album. Semi Detached have excelled themselves this time, and with great support from Kagoule and Kult Country it’s one not to miss. They are also putting on TRAAMS (with support from Cowtown) at the Gatsby for free.
They are only playing a small handful of UK dates, so we’re very lucky to have Shonen Knife playing at Queens Social this month. They’ve been making top notch music and influencing many artists for over 30 years. On the same night, Tired & Mardy put on Houndmouth & Mike Hughes for free at the Bowery, and there’s a lively night of music at the Leadmill with Jungle Lion, The Fuckwits, Reasons to be Cheerful on the bill.
Freaky Fuzz have a busy month with Victories at Sea, Psyence, Lovecraft, The Honeydrug Couple, and Klaus Johann Grobe all playing for free at the Washington. The Harley have something for everyone with Superdrug, Sky Larkin & Rad Stewart, Nadine Shah, Exit Calm, The Ramona Flowers & the Get Rad Fresher’s Party featuring Playlounge, The Disraeli Gears and Antibang. Swim Deep and Tim Burgess are also at Queens Social Club.
Charlotte Church unveils her new found indie persona down at the Leadmill, who also have Liam Fray and The Violet May playing their award-winning stage. CSS play Plug and Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun, Jetplane Landing and Blitz Kids play Corporation.
If you’re after something a bit different, Etai Keshiki headline Audacious Artspace on the 1st, whilst Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson are at Tye Die Tapes HQ. Not Shy of DIY present Boozey Du Fest III, a night of punk at the RedHouse, whilst Stay Positive head up things down at Bungalows & Bears on the 26th. The Folk Forest also present Kelly Joe Phelps on the same night at the Lantern Theatre.
If that isn’t enough, Best Friends are launching their new double A side upstairs in the Great Gatsby at the end of the month, inviting Slowcoaches and Grazes along for the ride. It’s also Sensoria time, and this year features Drenge, Trembling Bells, Sharon Kraus, Laura J Martin, Unmade Bed, The Broken Saints, The Payroll Union and Rafiki Jazz.
Full listings will be on the site shortly, but there’s something for everyone this month.
