Tramlines Festival 2010
Tramlines Sunday
The final day of an already immense weekend and a line-up fit to make your mouth water. A few time changes, which lead us to miss Joe Carnell and the Book Club so, kicking off the Sunday main stage for us, was the mighty Heim. Dressed up in Viking attire and kicking us off with a dance fusion headed up by the mighty Bozz. They certainly managed to get the crowd moving. Next band on were my must see of the weekend Lords of Flatbush.

Ruby Kid/Renegade Brass Band: University Gardens
The words Dylan and Hip Hop would not normally be used in relation to one another however The Ruby Kid is changing things up. With pre programmed beats and a backing band called the Black Jacobins The Ruby Kid makes eloquent observations of current issues. His music shows talent and intelligence in equal measures.

Raegan: The Grapes
This evening The Grapes is wall to wall with people waiting for The Heartbreaks to arrive. Tramlines has successfully enticed music lovers from all over the country and the city’s venues have come alive. Tonight’s fans are expecting this band to deliver a decent dose of their usual poetry infused indie rock and thankfully they don’t disappoint. What we’re treated to is a mix of irresistible melodies and romanticised lyrics that make you feel sad and warm at the same time.

Future of the Left: Corporation
This Cardiff-born creation graced the stage of Corporation marking the halfway point within the Tramlines festival. The Corporation punters got what they came for as they were treated to a delectable mix of post-hardcore indie as the testosterone-filled atmosphere fuelled the mosh-pit and acted as a fitting tribute to one of Sheffield’s more alternative venues.

Busker Bus
Busker Bus – Matt Abbott
At times the busker bus was like sardines on wheels however when Matt Abbott’s turn came to be thrown round the bus there were only two people in the audience. Matt introduced himself as a spoken poet however that was underselling the laughs he was about to serve up. Matt confidently moved round a variety of current topics but centred around the delights of the North such as his home town of Wakefield.

Blood Red Shoes: New Music Stage
If the Main Stage is deemed chart friendly then the Exposed New Music Stage is its dirty, notorious cousin, which suited headliners Blood Red Shoes. As they arrived the stage was suitably cloaked in crimson light made thick with dry ice which gifted the duo an edginess for opener It's Getting Boring By The Sea. They may have appeared fresh faced but behind their youthful good looks lied a dark, brooding reverb drenched malevolence.

Saturday Highlights
Saturday started brought about an acoustic vibe at Alibi, where Don’t Sleep Dream brought about a morose kind of dreamy feeling, maybe a tad too chilled, so Counterfeit headed down to the New Music Stage outside the City Hall, where as well as the slightly warm raspberry cider there was a decent sized crowd to watch Love at Death Beach.

Friday Highlights
In full anticipation of the weekend ahead, Counterfeit attended the official opening of the Tramlines Music Festival at Penelope’s. A rousing and amusing set from the England band kicked things off followed by a speech from the Lord Mayor, colloquially declaring things ‘op’n’. The second band of the weekend were Darke Horse, usually a foursome did a simple two man acoustic set, gentle, flowing and a nice easy introduction to the weekend, a total opposite to the next band on the list.

Focus: Leadmill
A packed Leadmill kicked off the first evening of Tramlines 2010 and with much anticipation await the entrance of legendary Dutch masters Focus. Since forming in 1970 and despite splitting and reforming three times since and this years Focus being only 50% of the original version, flautist Thij van Leer gives the band the authentic Focus sound with flowing keyboard and haunting flute, even down to the chanted vocals.

Bromhead’s Busker Bus!
Tramlines Times manages to catch up with Bromhead’s frontman Tim Hampton, one of this year's curates for the acts aboard the Tramlines Busker Bus! We asked him how the bus idea came about,

“We were asked to be the curators of the Busker Bus about a month ago,” explains Tim, “probably because we’ve been doing some cheeky guerrilla gigs in and around town.”
