Garforth & Myers - Bonfires (EP)
bonfiresI have never been a massive fan of folk music. but before listening to the first offering from Garforth & Myers, a slight chill ran down my spine upon learning about the dark, contemporary folk from the Barnsley duo. The recent explosion on to the commercial scene of folk-inspired Mumford & Sons has done nothing to boost my small knowledge of the genre, quite the opposite in fact.

As soon as I heard the opening bars of ‘Bonfires’, however, I knew I was in for a real treat. The chilled out track - packed with strings, harmonies and a relaxed beat throughout - gently draws you in and sets the tone for the four-track EP.

Rory Garforth and Adam Myers began putting together this self-financed album in 2009 after months of writing, planning and preparation and the result resonates with a polished sound.

The soft melody of ‘Mirrors’ would have you believe that the singer-songwriters have been making music together for many a year but in truth, Garforth & Myers only joined forces in 2007 when they decided to create something from their shared vision.

Parting track ‘Lighthouse’ comes with a slightly more upbeat edge and leaves you with a taste of what could be to come from these guys. Even if folk isn’t really your thing, I’d suggest you still give this one a listen.
