As far as first attempts go, Sheffield newcomers ‘The Velotones’ have had a pretty good swipe. With the release of their demo this week – recorded at Sheffield’s ‘2fly’ studio – we can gain a decent grasp of what this band are all about. Together since early this year, this is the first foray into music for all three members. Whilst keeping the songs fairly simple they have an overall professional sound and one that will find them making a name on the Sheffield gig scene in the weeks that follow this release.
With ‘Gallagheresque’ tones the lead singers voice powers this bands first recordings. ‘Stolen Town’ is the standout track which with catchy lead guitar and solid drum rhythms creating a stadium atmosphere that will leave any Oasis fan feeling a tiny bit nostalgic.
Other tracks ‘Take Me Home’ and ‘This is Rock and Roll’ whilst still using lead singer Matt Halls powerful vocals adopt a more rocky feel. With the heavy distortion from the bass the need for a second guitar is left redundant.
Whilst this is a great first attempt there is still definite room for improvement with this band. I felt all the songs on this demo were maybe dragged out a little bit and would like to see a little more refinement in terms of structure. These improvements will surely come as the band gains experience and confidence. Catch them live with their debut outing November 27th and a series of gigs sure to follow.
